DIGITAL ARTS I Course Description
Students will learn Adobe Photoshop program including working with layers, transparency, numerous filters and tools such as cloning, painting, and various artistic effects. Students will also learn how to import, manipulate, edit and print images using Photoshop. To create digital artwork pieces, students will use both their digital cameras (if they have them) and a scanner to import photos, drawings and other material such as magazine pictures. Students will also learn how to prepare images for both the internet and printing, including cropping, pixel and dpi dimensions and sizing.
Students will also learn the basics of using Adobe Illustrator and will learn how to create a logo and drawings using Illustrator. They will also learn how to bring their Illustrator logo and drawings into Photoshop, adding various effects including drop shadows, blurs, bevel and embosses and various lighting effects.
They will also learn traditional drawing for design including sketching their logo ideas and package design ideas in pencil on paper before scanning them to create the digital design in Illustrator.
Each student will have access to a PC computer in the classroom but are free to bring their own Macintosh or PC laptops if preferred, as long as their computers already have Photoshop and Illustrator on them.
Projects that students will create include:
1. Choosing one of their favorite photographs, students will learn to use contrast filters, cloning and color editing in Photoshop by creating a post card and / or birthday card with the photo and they will also add text to the card. The card will be printed out and taken home. Subject matter is open to anything such as landscapes, nature, flowers, people, pets, sports, vehicles, etc.
2. Students will learn to create one unique image by combining several photographs together by removing a subject such as a person, animal or vehicle from one image and placing them in another photograph while also adding or removing imagery from the background.
3. Students will choose one of their favorite products or brands, such as a food like a cereal or pizza or beverage, video game, DVD, music CD, perfume or makeup kit, clothing bag, etc. and they will rename the product, redesign the logo, and redesign and create a new package for their product. The package / box / bag / label / etc. will be printed out and assembled in the class and taken home. Students are also free to design a logo and package for their own imaginary product, something they would like to see sold in stores, instead of renaming and redesigning an existing one.
